Built in 1950, the Museum’s Fiat G.46-3B served as a trainer in the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare Italiana) as serial number MM53091. The G.46 was Fiat’s first post-WWII aircraft design, and just over 2oo examples rolled off their production line in Turin, Italy. The type enjoyed some export success, with 70 examples serving in Argentina’s air force, and small numbers in Austria and Syria too.
In 2015, we purchased this delightful aircraft from Frank N. Marici, who originally imported the G.46 from Italy four decades earlier. It has not flown since its arrival in Virginia Beach, however. While the Museum is keen to acquire WWII-era Italian types, this aircraft’s post-war design and production place it beyond the present scope of our collection policy, which is why we have decided to part with it, albeit reluctantly.
The aircraft is complete, including its original, inverted 6-cylinder Alfa-Romeo 115 engine, along with a spare engine, in its transport crate (see photos). The somewhat faded exterior finish mimics the livery of a WWII Italian Air Force fighter type. Â The paint scheme is thought to have been applied when the aircraft was first imported into the United States. The aircraft (and its logbooks) may be inspected by pre-arranged appointment. Aircraft located in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
