John M. Peterson

John is of counsel and a member of the ESOPs & Employee Benefits, Business Taxation, Labor & Employment, and Healthcare Practice Groups at Kaufman & Canoles. John has 45 years of experience as both a practicing attorney and CPA in the areas of retirement plans, employee benefits and tax law. John has extensive teaching experience on ERISA matters, with more than 25 years as an adjunct professor at William and Mary Law School and 15 plus years at Old Dominion University’s Professional Financial Planning program.
John’s honors include being named to the Best Lawyers in America, 2018; Virginia Super CPA by Virginia Business Magazine; Old Dominion University, Adjunct Professor, 1999-present; College of William & Mary School of Law, Adjunct Professor, 1976-2004.

Mr. Peterson is a Founding Member of the Hampton Roads Employee Benefit Study Group; sits on the Employee Benefit Committees ofthe Ameri can Institute of CPAs and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.

John obtained his B.S. from the College of William & Mary in 1970, and his J. D. and MTAX from the College of William & Mary School of Law.
