In October 1938 the Army Air Corps had 348 combat aircraft on hand, and it was assumed that the industry could produce around 7,500 additional planes per year. This presentation will explore how we went from this state, to an industrial giant that produced almost 325,000 aircraft by the end of 1945.
Join historian and author Terry Furgerson as he explores how one particular manufacturer – North American Aviation – responded to the challenge by opening a manufacturing facility in Dallas Texas. Although little known, and certainly not as talked-about as Ford’s Willow Run plant, this factory would go on to become the most prolific aircraft factory in the nation, credited with producing 18,784 aircraft by the end of the war.
