Summer of Flight – North American P-51D Mustang

Saturdays at 1pm from May to October, the Military Aviation Museum will be showcasing historical aircraft and commemorating important wartime events through narrated flying demonstrations.

Join us for our Summer of Flight program on Saturday, May 25 at 1:00pm, where we will
demonstrate our 1944 North American P-51D Mustang. Arguably the most iconic
American fighter of WWII, the Mustang is a testament to American ingenuity and
industrial capability. The Mustang was designed in 1940, with the first flying prototype
built in just 120 days. While it was originally produced with an Allison V-12 engine, when
mated with the British-designed Rolls Royce Merlin engine, the Mustang had the speed
and range to escort the bombers from England to Berlin and back, turning the tide of the
air war in Europe. Known as the “Ace Maker,” the Mustang downed 5,000 enemy
aircraft and 281 pilots became aces with five or more aerial victories. Join us to see this
legendary fighter take to the skies over Pungo.

Experience the rumble from the engine up close as you hear from the pilots about what it is like to fly these incredible aircraft, learn about the battles they participated in, and about the men and women who built, flew and maintained them during the war!

Summer of Flight is included in your general museum admission and free for museum members. Each event starts at 1:00 pm unless otherwise noted.
